Archaeologists have found evidence of mass cannibalism at human burial site in Germany

Up to 500 human remains, included children and even unborn babies, near the village of Herxheim have been cannibalized several thousand year ago. Team leader Dr.Boulestin said the human remains had been "intentionally mutilated", spit-roasted and that there was evidence many of them had been chewed.

Goldstone wins human rights award from Sweden NGOs

Richard Goldstone, the South African jurist and author of a controversial UN report which accused Israel and Hamas of committing war crimes during the Israel Defense Forces' military offensive in the Gaza Strip last winter, will receive the Stockholm Human Rights Award, it was announced on Thursday.

"Richard Goldstone has made an outstanding career in the promotion of the rule of law and human rights, first in his home country South Africa and during the last fifteen years in various highly prestigious international fora," the International Legal Assistance Consortium, a Sweden-based umbrella group of non-governmental organizations which oversees the awarding of the prize, said on Thursday.

The UN General Assembly endorsed the report last month and submitted it to the Security Council. The 192-member General Assembly adopted the resolution last month by a vote of 114-18, with others absent or abstaining. The resolution calls on the Security Council to act if either side fails to launch credible investigations within three months.

The report on the Gaza war was drafted by an expert UN panel chaired by Goldstone, and concluded that both Israel and Palestinian militants committed war crimes and possible crimes against humanity.

The harshly worded UN draft resolution, composed by Arab member states, has not been softened despite U.S. and European efforts.

GSTAAD, Switzerland (AP) -- Roman Polanski began his house arrest on $4.5 million bail Friday, rolling into the luxury resort of Gstaad in a police convoy to a warm welcome from his wife and children at his Alpine chalet.

Polanski persuaded Swiss authorities to end his two months of incarceration in a Swiss jail pending their decision on whether to extradite him to the U.S. in a 32-year-old sex case. Polanski's family had been waiting eagerly at the chalet, peeking out the windows to look for him as Swiss authorities worked out the last-minute details of his transfer.

Just before 1 p.m., two police cars went straight into the garage, which has direct access to the house, then left twenty minutes later. Polanski was unseen behind the vehicles' tinted windows, but police told The Associated Press that he was inside.

A man who failed to obey that principle found himself hurtling out of the cockpit, smashing through the Perspex canopy and into space after grabbing the black- and yellow-striped handle between his legs. He had inadvertently pulled the eject lever and found himself blasted 100 metres into the sky on his rocket-powered seat.

The South African air force has confirmed the incident that took place last Wednesday, when the passenger took off for a flight with an experienced pilot from South Africa's Silver Falcons air display team. Investigators are assuming that the passenger tried to steady himself while the pilot was putting the Pilatus PC-7 Mk II through its paces by grabbing the eject lever.

American actress Sandra Bullock is fighting Janine Lindemulder for custody of her five-year-old child.

The 45-year-old star is married to Janine Lindemulder's ex-husband Jesse James, with whom he has a daughter, Sunny.

But Bullock and James are fighting for sole custody of the child, accusing Lindemulder of being an unfit mother who falls asleep following drug binges.

Lindemulder, 40, has also just been released from jail for tax evasion.

But heavily tattooed Janine, who has been in more than 100 adult movies, is fighting back - and attacked the Hollywood actress on an American TV show. 'What would give her the right to take away my daughter?' she asked.

On Aug. 16, the Russian naval frigate Ladny, armed with large cannons and anti-aircraft missiles, liberated the Arctic Sea from pirate control. The men who had hijacked the ship -- and most of its crew -- were flown to Moscow. The alleged hijackers are now in jail.

Sergei Petruk one of the crewmembers would never have thought it possible that his crew could run into pirates in the Baltic Sea. "They were wearing black masks and jackets with 'polis' -- the Swedish word for police -- written on them," he recalls. "But I quickly realized that they weren't real police officers." The weapons the men were carrying were too shabby and worn to be used by the coast guard of a Western country, Petruk reasoned -- and they were Kalashnikovs.

Besides, Petruk adds, the kidnappers spoke Russian when they contacted their accomplices in Moscow via radio. The hijackers were apparently on the lookout for a ship that was supposed to pick them up. But it never showed up.
